The Maldives is not a destination so much as a category: roughly 1,200 coral islands, of which around 150 host a single resort each, scattered across 26 atolls south of Sri Lanka. The decision is not "which hotel" but "which island" — and that decision is layered with details about reef quality, snorkel-from-the-villa access, transfer time, all-inclusive package depth, and whether the island is in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Get the island right and the rest is sun, water, and silence.

• Baa Atoll. UNESCO biosphere reserve, famous for manta-ray and whale-shark season at Hanifaru Bay (June–November). Seaplane transfer.
• Ari Atoll. Year-round whale-shark and manta sightings. Mix of mid-range and top-tier resorts. Seaplane or domestic-flight transfer.
• Far South (Addu, Gaafu). Domestic flight from Malé. Untouched diving, cooler crowds, less commercial. For divers and travelers who want true isolation.

November to April is the dry season — flat seas, sunshine, and the highest rates. May to October is the wet season with afternoon storms and cheaper packages. Visibility under water peaks January–April. Manta and whale-shark season in Hanifaru is June–November.

• Almost every resort is on its own island. Once checked in, you do not leave — meal plans, dive packages, and excursions all happen on-island.
• Speedboat transfers run anytime; seaplane transfers operate only in daylight hours, which can dictate flight selection.
• A "water villa" puts you above the lagoon with stairs to the reef; a "beach villa" puts you on the sand. Most travelers prefer two or three nights in each.
• Alcohol is only served on resort islands. The capital Malé and inhabited local islands are dry by law.

Are all-inclusive packages worth it?

Almost always — once on-island, food and drink prices are high and there is nowhere else to eat. Premium AI plans typically cover meals, alcohol, snorkeling, and one or two excursions.

Is the Maldives only for couples?

No. Many resorts have dedicated kids clubs and family villas with two bedrooms. A handful of resorts are explicitly adults-only — filter accordingly.

How long do I need?

Five to seven nights is the sweet spot. The transfer in and out is half a day each way; shorter trips feel rushed once you factor in seaplane schedules.
