Santorini is shaped less by neighborhoods than by altitude: the famous caldera-rim villages (Oia, Imerovigli, Fira, Firostefani) cling to volcanic cliffs 250 meters above the Aegean, while the seaside resorts at Kamari and Perissa sit on flat black-sand beaches. Cliff-side cave suites with private plunge pools are the island's signature stay — and the reason many travelers come — but they are expensive, adults-leaning, and require comfort with steep stairs. The lower beach hotels are calmer, more affordable, and more family-friendly.

• Firostefani. A 10-minute walk from Fira along the caldera path. Cheaper than Imerovigli with the same views. Good middle-ground choice for couples and design-led stays.
• Kamari & Perissa (beach side). Flat black-sand beaches on the eastern and southern shores. Family hotels, beach clubs, far cheaper than the caldera. No sunset views but easy beach days.

• Don't book Oia for a one-night-only stay if you want the iconic sunset — the village shuts to a single line of human traffic two hours before; staying there is the only way to actually enjoy it.
• Cliff-side hotels involve steep stairs and donkey paths. If mobility is a concern, choose a hotel listed as having vehicle access or stay in Fira/Firostefani.
• The cable car from Fira down to the old port has long queues at cruise-ship hours; either go very early or very late, or skip and walk down (550 steps, watch for donkey droppings).
• Rent an ATV or compact car only if you need beach mobility — central Fira and Oia are walkable and parking is a nightmare. KTEL buses connect main villages.

For a honeymoon or anniversary, yes — the design, the plunge pool, and the unobstructed caldera view are genuinely unlike anywhere else. For a longer trip or a family stay, a non-caldera hotel plus a sunset dinner at a caldera restaurant gets you 80% of the experience for 30% of the cost.

Is Santorini family-friendly?

The caldera villages are challenging for strollers and small children due to stairs and unguarded edges. Beach-side hotels in Kamari, Perissa, or Imerovigli (some) cater well to families. Many top cliff-side hotels are 14+ or adults-only.

How many nights should I plan?

Three to four nights is the standard. One day for Oia and the caldera, one for the wineries and inland villages (Pyrgos, Megalochori), one for a beach or boat day, one buffer for slow mornings.
