The decision is not "which hotel" but "which island" — and that decision is layered with details about reef quality, snorkel-from-the-villa access, transfer time, all-inclusive package depth, and whether the island is in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. • Almost every resort is on its own island. Once checked in, you do not leave — meal plans, dive packages, and excursions all happen on-island.
• Speedboat transfers run anytime; seaplane transfers operate only in daylight hours, which can dictate flight selection.
• A "water villa" puts you above the lagoon with stairs to the reef; a "beach villa" puts you on the sand. Most travelers prefer two or three nights in each.
• Alcohol is only served on resort islands. The capital Malé and inhabited local islands are dry by law.
