Why Bali: Tropical paradise of terraced rice fields, sacred temples, and luxurious clifftop resorts.

Bali: a traveler’s guide

Bali is six islands' worth of geography pretending to be one — clifftop sea spray in Uluwatu, terraced rice in Ubud, surf town in Canggu, family beaches in Sanur, ferry-port-to-Lombok in Padang Bai. There is no single Bali hotel experience. The all-villa resorts in the Bukit Peninsula stare down 80-meter limestone cliffs at the Indian Ocean; the jungle resorts in Ubud are built into the gorges of the Ayung River; the family villas in Seminyak put you a sandal away from sunset cocktails on the sand.

Where to stay

  • Seminyak. Sunset beach bars, designer shopping, a tight cluster of polished hotels. Most beginner-friendly base for first-timers.
  • Ubud. Inland, jungle and rice fields. Yoga, art, Balinese culture. Hotels here are villas in valleys with infinity pools facing the canopy.
  • Uluwatu / Bukit Peninsula. Limestone cliffs, world-class surf breaks, the most photogenic clifftop hotels. 45 minutes from the airport.
  • Canggu. Surf-and-laptop town. Black-sand beaches, beach clubs, co-working spaces. Younger crowd than Seminyak.
  • Sanur. East-coast, calm reef, sunrise-side. Quietest of the popular bases — favored by families and longer-stay travelers.

When to go

May to September is the dry season — hot, mostly cloudless, and busiest in July/August. The shoulder months (April, October) are the sweet spot. November to March is the green season — heavy afternoon rain, half-empty resorts, and the lowest rates of the year.

Practical tips

  • Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) is on the Bukit-Kuta border. Transfers to Ubud are about 90 minutes; to Uluwatu, 45 minutes. Pre-book the airport transfer through the hotel.
  • Bali's island roads are slow — 30 km on the map can be 90 minutes in traffic. Plan one or two areas per trip rather than zig-zagging.
  • Many resorts include a daily complimentary shuttle to the nearest beach club or town — ask before paying for taxis.
  • The local currency (Indonesian Rupiah) deals in millions. ATMs are abundant; many resorts accept cards and US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

Do hotels include breakfast?
Most mid- and upper-tier Bali resorts include breakfast in the rate. Luxury all-villa properties may charge extra for in-villa breakfast service. Check the booking provider.
Is Bali a good honeymoon destination?
Yes — clifftop villas in Uluwatu, jungle villas in Ubud, and overwater pavilions in select Bukit resorts are designed around couples. Many properties offer adults-only sections.
Are Balinese ceremonies a problem for travelers?
They are part of the appeal. Roads occasionally close for processions; plan loosely on temple holidays. Hotels notify guests of any local schedule that affects transfers.
